OAKLAND, CA - The Oakland Convention & Visitors Bureau in conjunction
with Chabot Space & Science Center have invited the INTERNATIONAL
PLANETARIUM SOCIETY to conduct their 2008 Conference in Oakland, California.
Chabot Space & Science Center proposes to host the 2008 Conference
in Oakland from July 18 through 24, 2008. Northern California hasn’t
been the site since 1972 and the Conference was last held in the United
States in 2002.
The International Planetarium Society is the global association of planetarium
professionals. Its nearly 700 members come from 35 countries around the
world. They represent schools, colleges and universities, museums, and
public facilities of all sizes including both fixed and portable planetariums.
The primary goal of the Society is to encourage the sharing of ideas
among its members through conferences, publications, and networking.
IPS Conference attendees would surely marvel at Chabot Space & Science
Center’s brand-new sophisticated array of projection technology,
digital effects and advanced audiovisual capabilities. Chabot’s
planetarium is capable of projecting a brilliant seamless image over
the entire 70-foot dome surface and can deliver jaw-dropping digital
sound. The images surround the audience, extending beyond the peripheral
vision, leading to an experience that is fully immersive and engaging.
Chabot’s Digital Universe is the world’s most extensive
and scientifically accurate three-dimensional interactive atlas of the
observable Universe-scientists at the American Museum of Natural History
in New York, with support from NASA, combined astronomical observations
from around the world with state-of-art astrophysical computer models
to create it.
Other advantages of hosting the conference in Oakland are many to include
its premium location with close proximity to NASA Ames Research Facility,
Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, University of California Berkeley,
Lawrence Hall of Science, National Laboratories, Pixar Studios, LucasArts,
Dreamworks, Electronic Arts, etc. Additionally, Oakland is 12 minutes
from San Francisco and less than an hour drive to the Napa/Sonoma Wine
County and the Silicon Valley.
Oakland International Airport serves over 14 million
passengers with over 200 daily flights, both domestic
and international carriers to 32 nonstop destinations
including the Hawaiian Islands, the New York area,
Atlanta and Mexico.
Oakland is positioned in the heart of the Bay Area between the San Francisco
Bay and the coastal hills and offers an excellent year round climate,
a wide variety of hotels, accessible transportation, unique attractions,
turn-of-the century mansions, world-class museums, great restaurants
and nightlife, diverse shopping, professional sports, beautiful parks,
